I
hunted 5 of the last 8 days. We hunted quail in West
Texas....fair day only shot 6 birds over 11 pts. (my fault) Then
I hunted on Wed of last week it was 39 degrees with the wind blowing
30-40 mph per the radio be4 I got out of the truck. In only 2hrs
and 30 mins. Cedarwoods Destiny "Kit" had 16 points of which
5 were coveys. Good Day and Lots of Birds. Thursday hunted
Ducks on the Texas Coast and Kit retrieved 11 ducks. Kit
had one quadruple retrieve. She retrieved the close bird 1st,
then swam right past 2 downed ducks floating on the water and
continues for about 70 yards and picked up another duck that no one
saw go down. When she returned I sent her back and she retrieved
the other 2 ducks, all 4 birds were delivered to hand.
Took Friday off and Goose hunted Saturday on the Texas Costal Prairie.
I think this was her 1st goose hunt. We sat out 800 - 1,000
decoys. She sat perfectly still on the levy. I might add
the Guides were skeptical to say the least of a Pudelpointer and her
capabilities. Telling horror stories a guy and his untrained
Labrador the day before. Sunrise came and so did the birds, from
singles to groups of a few to hundred or more. The 1st bird was
shot and the Guide instructed me to send the dog which I did and she
wouldn't retrieve it? I had to walk about 75 yards to get to the
downed goose and kit. Which was were the bird went down. All she
wanted to do was Kill that big bird. She and I hand a little
talk and a little electricity later she decided It was in
her best interest to fetch the goose and I was the boss. She
preformed great the rest of the day delivering 12 or so of the 30
birds we shot to hand. She even made one retrieve of over 200
yards. She even brought several of them back alive. At the
end of the day the Guides told me I was welcome to bring my dog back
anytime and it was pleasure watching her work.
